Real Life Stories for Interactive Telling and Listening
Who was Lydia Darragh, and what did she do in Philadelphia during the American Revolution? And who is Binti Jua? Lydia and Binti are two of 21 people and animals who have a story to tell. You and your students will be the storytellers. But this is more than a copyable collection of stories.
As the subtitle says, these stories are for "Interactive Telling and Listening." In short, there are two equally important reasons for using this book. Obviously, one reason is to listen to engaging stories and to work on listening comprehension and vocabulary. The "interactive" aspect of the book is that it includes a collection of "interactors" - phrases and sentences to be used as the story unfolds and your students become involved in the drama and the details. The interactors can be copied and pasted on index cards to be used while the story is told and later in everyday discourse.
There are teacher interactors such as:
Do you understand? Shall I repeat that?
What does _______ mean?
And student interactors:
Did you say _____? What does _____ mean? Why did he/she do that?
This collection of stories is also very versatile. Each story/unit includes:
A title page with an illustration and a prologue
A vocabulary page with words that are central to the story
The story
A gapped version of the story
A "retell" page with a sequenced list of words to guide the student in retelling the story
A dictation summing up the story
A short idiomatic dialogue commenting on the story
A writing prompt
Internet web sites for further explorations.
