The Jolly Readers are designed for children who have learned to read and write with Jolly Phonics.
There are three series : Inky Mouse and Friends', Ceneral Fiction and Ninfiction. In all threem the vocabulary is carefully controlled, so children can apply their new reading skills.
At the Red Level (the first level), most words are spelled regularly, and can be sounded out with the 42 letter sounds first taught in Jolly Phonics.
As a guide, hight type is used for those few letters that should not be sounded out, such as the in 'lamb'.
There are also several 'tricky' words, which children need to learn by sight.
The tricky words introduced at the Red Level are shown at the end of each book.
